Sputnik - A total of four people were killed in France since the start of violent "yellow vest" protests against fuel price rises, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Tuesday.

"Since the start of the protests, four our compatriots died. Hundreds of citizens, in particular, members of our security forces, were injured, often seriously," Philippe said addressing the nation on television.

Earlier in the day, Philippe said he would suspend the introduction of the three fiscal measures, including the fuel tax hike, amid violent protests of the recent days. The measures in question include the carbon tax on gasoline, fuel and diesel to which the so-called yellow vests movement violently objected.

The "yellow vest" protests, named after the obligatory attribute of French drivers, a yellow light-reflective vest, have been held in France since November 17.

Saturday's "yellow vest" protests were accompanied by violent clashes between the protesters and police, rioting, burning cars and destroyed shops and banks in Paris. As a result, 412 people were detained and 133 people were injured, including 23 security officials.

In late 2017, the French government approved the decision to raise the direct tax on diesel fuel, which is the most popular type of fuel in the country. Diesel prices in France have risen by around 23 percent since the beginning of the year, while the gasoline prices have gone up by 15 percent. Prices were initially set to increase further in January.
