The UK- based Guide Dogs for the Blind foundation , has recently announced the Tunisia is to host the 6 th leg of its “Seven splendid marathons” event in Tunisia on April 12, 2008 . The marathon which is to run by visually impaired sportsmen comprises 7 legs to be run over 7 continents and aims at promoting further awareness and at collecting funds for the foundation.
The first legs of the race took place respectively the Falkland Islands , Rio de Janeiro , Los Angeles , Sydney , Dubai and now Tunis . The last leg will take place in London on April 13. Each race will cover a distance of 42, 15 kilometres . The runners will be aided during the race by persons of their choice.
The Tunisian stage of the race will be launched at the coastal village of Korba on April 12 at 8 am and will finish at Menzel Bouzelfa, a town in the Cap Bon area known for its orange groves. The estimated time of the race is approximately 5 hours.
Dave, a 50 year old runner who is about to make history by completing the 7 stages of the race, said “I will be honored to have Tunisian supporters at the time of the marathon and their encouragements will prove to the world that sightlessness is neither a barrier to independence, nor a handicap to human achievement”.
